What to pack on your trip to Jamaica

Documents
Other than the obvious things such as your passport and plane ticket. There are a few other pertinent documents you can take with you on your next vacation to Jamaica.
- A copy of your passport
- ATM Card
- Book (for the plane and beach)
- Credit Card
- Phone number list
- Photocopied ID/passports
- Picture ID (for example a drivers license)
- Health insurance Information
What to wear in Jamaica
We know you are on vacation and your most pressing concern for attire is the many swimsuits you will wear on the beach.
When trying to decide what to bring to Jamaica, the main thing that comes up is your attire.
Here are few clothing items you might want to bring with you on vacation:
- Water shoes or Old sneakers (it will save you the hassle of having to rent them at the various attractions you visit)
- Sturdy walking shoes
- If you are staying in the hills bring a shawl or jacket. It tends to get a bit chilly in the mountainous areas of Jamaica.
- Some restaurants have dress codes, so for women bring a nice dress and for men bring some slacks.
- Most rainfall occurs on the eastern coast of the island (Portland) and the rainy season is from May to October so bring a raincoat or jacket if you are traveling during this time period.
- The temperature can go up to the high 90’s Fahrenheit during the summer months so bring along shorts, sun dresses and other lightweight, breathable clothing.
- Bring a good beach bag
- Bring a knapsack. It will come in handy if you plan to go on excursions in Jamaica.
- Bring a good hat. For the men out there who are bald remember you have to protect your head.
- Good sunglasses
- Toiletries and Medication
The majority of the products you are used to seeing in the USA (or other countries) are readily available in Jamaica.
However, to avoid shopping for miscellaneous items on a vacation here are a few things you should bring:
- If you have any serious food allergies remember to bring your Epi pen. There might not be a hospital nearby.
- Bring bug spray, you are in the tropics so expect to see mosquitoes or sand flies.
- Suntan Lotion (The Jamaican sun can be unforgiving)
- Aloe Vera Gel – This is a great idea, especially if you get sunburned
- Prescription medication – Make sure you bring an adequate supply with you. If you need to fill a prescription you will need a prescription from a local doctor.
Bringing Gifts for Jamaicans
There are a few hotels that have their own foundations. A few that come to mind are Goldeneye in Orachabessa, The Rockhouse in Negril and the Sandals Hotel chain.
Their foundations are usually connected with schools in the community, so school supplies would be a great idea. If you are bringing gifts for a Jamaican friend, a few gift ideas are colognes or perfumes or clothing items.
Spending Money
If you are trying to figure out the exchange rate a very accurate tool to use is the Oanda Converter. Do not change money at the airport or your hotel (they usually offer much lower exchange rates).
You can withdraw Jamaican money at your ATM. Keep in mind however that you will be charged extra in fees. The main banks in Jamaica are the National Commercial Bank and Scotiabank Jamaica.
Try and find out beforehand if your bank has any arrangements with local banks regarding bank fees. If this is possible you will find that the bank withdrawal fees are waived.
You can also use a Cambio to exchange US currency. These Cambios offer higher rates than the banks. Keep in mind most places accept US dollars.
If you are bringing cash make sure you have a lot of US $1 and US $5 for tips and miscellaneous expenses. It also wouldn’t hurt to let your credit card company know you are traveling to Jamaica.
Entertainment devices and Chargers
When you are traveling you always have a long wait so it’s great to bring entertainment devices. It is also a great way to keep the children occupied.
If you are from the US you don’t need a plug adapter. If you are not from the US you will need a plug adapter.
Other Supplies
Here are a few other things you might need on your next vacation to Jamaica:
- If you are staying at a non-all inclusive hotel consider bringing your own Snorkel and Mask. If you are staying at a villa ask the managers if they supply them.
- First-aid-kit
- Luggage locks
- Headphones
- Camera Supplies (battery and memory cards)
- Digital Luggage Scale (make sure you never go over the weight limit again)
- Waterproof bag to carry wet clothing
If you forget something don’t stress. If you forgot to bring something more than likely you can buy it in Jamaica.
However, try and avoid the tourist stores and shop where the locals shop.
Most importantly don’t forget to bring a relaxed attitude. Remember you are on holiday! We know Jamaica is not perfect but seriously where is!
